Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy will introduce an unusual bill in Helena. My bill tackles workplace bullying, school bullying and cyber and electronic bullying — the first of its kind. The bill is also supported by Sen. Rowlie Hutton.
This is the third attempt. The first time I felt HB213 was too punitive. The second, SB494, was better but not quite right, and the business community was afraid of it. SB196 is true to my nature and my purpose. My goal is to create a bill that is more educational than confrontational.
This type of bill should not be about political parties but about people and their interactions with each other. I’m saddened that we feel a need to legislate conduct and civility, but in this day and age that seems to be a requirement. I believe that by defining bullying — both in the schools and in the workplace — and putting definitions in place, we can work to develop a system that addresses the problem.
Yes, there is a story behind this. There are many; I’d be happy to share. For now, it is vital we come together as Americans and do what is right for children, students, employees and all individuals.
