Some bosses do care for work environment

By Lindsey Novak, HeraldTribune.com

Q: Your article on bullying in the workplace brought back memories. I worked for a company that promoted a woman to head our department. She turned out to be a bully and caused higher blood pressure in one of my co-workers who was already on high blood pressure medication.

A few of us went to the human resources department to let them know what was happening. They considered our complaints and eventually realized that the woman was not cut out for managing anyone.

The company put her through a management seminar with several other co-workers. I would have loved to have been in that seminar, because after it, the company brought in a new manager. We had to put up with the bully for only four months.

A: This is a wonderful experience to share. Employees need to know there are companies that care about their workplace environment. The trickledown effect is a common phenomenon, whether or not upper management wants to recognize it. A CEO who is aloof and insensitive to his direct reports creates a cold and uncaring environment for all employees. As word passes on that management doesn’t care about its people, the good people leave for better-managed companies.

What is left are employees who have to fend for themselves among the abusers who never are reprimanded and who likely never belonged in the positions they were given.

Regardless of the economy, a job candidate should dig deep into a company’s values and manner of doing business before accepting a job.
